When Richard Matheson’s family stopped at the opera house in Virginia City, Nevada, during a vacation, he was struck by a photo of Maude Adams, an early 20th-century stage actress who possessed a haunting beauty. There are also parallels that can be seen between that novel and Time and Again, written by Jack Finney. Somewhere in Time is based on a novel, Bid Time Return, by Richard Matheson. Perhaps that was because it was basically a science fiction theme wrapped up in a romance movie. The movie didn’t do very well at the box office in its initial run, but developed a cult following thanks to cable television. With these two characters, anything was possible. When you saw the two of them together, you really believed that time travel was possible. His piercing blue eyes could melt almost every girl’s heart! Jane Seymour, a relative unknown at the time, was so beautiful as Elise McKenna. I was already a huge fan of Christopher Reeve (oh, that Superman!). ![]() I don’t know about you, but I have been enamored with the movie ‘Somewhere in Time’ since I first saw it. ![]() ![]() ![]() And Lawson has the financial means, supportive family, and smarts to be a good advocate for herself. I think Lawson did a really good job showing what a struggle it is to manage her mental illness. They see someone struggling with mental illness and say, “Well, why don’t they take medication?”–like that would solve all their problems. Most of these people see treatment and/or mental health drugs as a cure-all. Now, I’ve had a number of interactions with people who have limited knowledge of mental illness. Lawson also discusses in detail her experiences with an experimental treatment for her depression and anxiety called transcranial magnetic stimulation. She is very forthcoming about her ongoing struggles and the stigma she’s faced. Lawson struggles with severe depression and anxiety along with a host of autoimmune diseases, Rheumatoid Arthritis and many other frustrating conditions that impair her quality of life. The most meaningful parts of the book were when Lawson described her physical and mental health. On the whole I definitely liked it, but it’s not one of my favorites. I found some parts of this book witty, some parts moving, and some parts a little trying. This is my first experience with Lawson, although she is a New York Times bestselling author and famous blogger. In a desperate search for another audiobook at the library, I found Broken (in the best possible way) (2021) by Jenny Lawson. These days it seems the only books I have time for are audiobooks. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() * Image contains a collection of different covers from The Steel Prince Issues 1-4* There, he encounters an unruly band of soldiers, a lawless landscape, and the intoxicatingly deadly presence of the newly returned pirate queen, Arisa… The youthful Maresh is sent to a violent and unmanageable port city on the Blood Coast of Verose, on strict orders from his father, King Nokil Maresh, to cut his military teeth in this lawless landscape. He doesn’t want to make you scream with horror. His monsters are epic and his ideas of despair and destruction, colossal. The phantasmagoria that his story creates is that of a cosmic proportion. Lovecraft writes with the frenzied and feverish hand of a prophet of doom and sets the tone for the story right from the beginning. The Call of Cthulu is the story that sets the stage for a series of stories about the Old Ones, great beings of a time before time who have been trapped for eons in a state of death-like sleep, waiting for the right time and the right alignment of stars and planets so that they can restore their reign in the universe. The humans are there, even disgusting ones and terrible ones and it is these humans who actually do all the dirty work that makes one squirm, but they aren’t the ones who are supposed to evoke a feeling of gloomy foreboding it is the Old Ones. ![]() Lovecraft doesn’t write about Earthly horrors. What it does, and exceedingly well, is to fill you with a feeling of dread and leave you uneasy as you try to comprehend the nature of beings that he has described in his story. It does not do what a horror story is expected to do. It is not gut-wrenching, disgustingly gory or even scary in the right sense of the word. There’s something regal and respectable about Lovecraftian horror. As the novel begins, a brand-new airline employee experiences an event that she is later told never to talk about: a plane carrying 36 babies, and no one else, not even a pilot, shows up without warning at a nearby gate. In a tantalizing opener to a new series, Haddix (the Shadow Children series) taps into a common childhood fantasy-that you are really the offspring of royalty or famous people, and were somehow adopted by an ordinary family-and one-ups it by adding in time travel. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() In our fourth episode, we’re going to talk about how we approach dating being married. ![]() To support us financially or find more info about our story, visit our website.
